Useless people

\nUseless people!–who needs ’em?
\nYou know the types.
\nThey ignore your existence,
\nwait for you to contact them,
\nfail to respond in a timely fashion when you do,
\nact to others as though they care,
\nwhile snubbing you when no one’s around.
\nOr they send one card or one email
\nor call once
\nand then disappear.
\nToken people,
\nthey have taken themselves to the periphery
\nof your life.
\nPerhaps you should send them a note:
\n“Since you have ignored my existence
\nduring this critical period of my life,
\nyou have taken yourself to the periphery of my existence.
\nI see no reason to retrieve you from that territory.”
\nBut that makes YOU seem petty,
\nwhen in fact it is they that are unspeakably small
\nand unsatisfactory.
\nIf they were students in a course,
\nyou’d give them an “F.”
\nThey’ve failed to show up,
\nfailed to do all homework,
\nfailed to learn anything,
\nrefused even to ask how they could do better.
\nFortunately, there are people in my life
\nwho’ve made the grade,
\nwho’ve cared enough to be there through thick and thin.
\nI’m grateful for them
\nand for people who’ve risen to the occasion when
\nI had no reason to expect they would.
\nBut the toads and slackers who’ve been endlessly
\nlazy
\nuncaring
\nuninvolved
\nhave managed to let me down
\nwhen I’m fighting a battle for my life.
\nShame on them,
\nand shame on me if I don’t figure out
\nhow to process this in a way
\nthat leaves me calm and serene.
\nThese people aren’t worth my rage.
\nThey have qualified as barely human
\nin their detachment
\nand do not deserve any further involvement on my part.
